Kick off of Regenera4MED Project: Pioneering a Shift Towards Regenerative Tourism in the Mediterranean

08/04/2025

The Mediterranean is renowned for its rich cultural diversity and dynamic tourism sector. However, the region now faces growing challenges from climate change. Tourism accounts for 35% of global international tourist arrivals and remains a pillar of the regional economy. Yet, its rapid growth has often caused environmental degradation. Therefore, a shift toward more sustainable tourism practices is urgently needed.

This is where Regenera4MED comes in. Funded by the Interreg Euro-MED Programme, the project aims to lead a fundamental transformation. It moves beyond sustainability, embracing Regenerative Tourism – a model that not only reduces harm but actively restores ecosystems, strengthens local economies, and protects cultural and natural heritage.

The project officially kicked off with two online meetings held on 24 and 30 April 2025. These sessions brought together partners to launch the collaboration and set the foundation for upcoming activities.

Regenera4MED is a collaborative effort. It brings together public authorities, SMEs, civil society, academia, and environmental groups from across the Mediterranean. Together, they will address the climate impacts on tourism and test solutions on the ground.

Key features of regenera4med project:

  • Duration: 33 months, from April 2024 to December 2027.
  • Budget: Over 2.4 million euros, with 80% co-financing from the ERDF Funds.
  • Pilot Areas: Six pilot regions—Catalonia (Spain), Liguria and Abruzzo (Italy), Crete (Greece), Corsica (France), and Split Dalmatia (Croatia). These areas will test regenerative tourism experiences focusing on community engagement, cultural preservation, and environmental resilience.
  • Tools & Outputs: Practical tools such as the RISET digital tool, the Regenera4MED Blueprint, and a Guide to EU Funding will help stakeholders implement regenerative practices across the Mediterranean and beyond.

project objectives

  • Promote climate change adaptation and enhance the resilience of the tourism sector

  • Develop a 5-Helix governance model, fostering inclusive cooperation among key actors

  • Test and evaluate regenerative tourism practices, identifying best practices for wider use

  • Position the Mediterranean as a global leader in sustainable and regenerative tourism

Moreover, the project benefits from the support of key transnational organisations, such as CPMR-IMC, NECSTouR, the WestMED Initiative, and the Union for the Mediterranean. Thanks to this backing, Regenera4MED will help shape a new tourism paradigm. It offers a replicable model for other regions facing similar challenges.

The journey has just begun, stay tuned as Regenera4MED drives change, one destination at a time.
