What we do

Regenera4MED is a 33-month Interreg Euro-MED project co-funded under the Programme’s Mission Enhancing Sustainable Tourism” and with a budget of over 2.4 million euros.

Led by a coalition of Mediterranean partners, including Catalonia, Liguria, Abruzzo, Crete, Corsica, and Split Dalmatia County, this project will pioneer a new regenerative tourism model that aims to go beyond sustainability, actively restoring and enhancing environmental, cultural, and community values. As the Mediterranean is a major global tourism hub, the project will involve multiple stakeholders, including local communities, public authorities, SMEs, academia, and environmental organizations, working together through a quintuple helix governance model.

hoW WE DO IT?

 The project will focus on three main elements:

  1. Regenerative tourism model – Testing and operationalizing a new regenerative tourism model in six pilot regions (Catalonia, ES; Liguria, IT; Abruzzo, IT; Crete, GR; Corsica, FR; Split Dalmatia, HR) to promote climate change adaptation, resilience, and positive environmental impact.
  2. Regenerative experiences – Developing and testing regenerative tourism experiences to create sustainable travel options that strengthen local economies and preserve local heritage and culture.
  3. Knowledge and tools – Creating tools for self-evaluation, including the RISET digital tool, and designing the Regenera4MED BluePrint to ensure the scalability of the project’s outcomes.

wHAT ARE THE EXPECTED RESULTS?

As we work with local communities across the Mediterranean, here are the main results you can expect from Regenera4MED. These tools, plans, and experiences are designed not only to transform tourism in our pilot regions, but also to inspire and support other territories looking to do the same.

  • The Regenera4MED Blueprint: A practical guide for regions and communities to build regenerative tourism. It brings together three key elements:

    • A collaborative governance model to align local efforts and include all voices;

    • A stakeholder engagement programme with training, workshops, and mentoring;

    • A self-assessment tool to help destinations and businesses evaluate their readiness and next steps.

  • Local Strategic Plans for Regenerative Tourism: Shaped by local communities and organizations, these plans are grounded in a shared understanding of current challenges. They define shared goals, concrete actions, and how to monitor progress over time.
  • Regenerative Tourism Experience Proposals: 13 tourism experiences will be co-designed with local stakeholders. Each proposal supports the local economy, protects the environment, and enriches both visitors and residents.
  • A Guide to EU Funding for Regenerative Tourism: To help local actors turn ideas into action, this guide explains how to access EU funding. It outlines relevant programmes, application procedures, and tips for building a strong proposal.
  • Long-Term Sustainability Plans for Each Destination: To ensure lasting impact beyond the project, each destination will adopt a sustainability plan focused on community involvement, financial viability, and strong local governance.

Join Our Circle of Insight

To keep Regenera4MED on the right track and connected to broader regional and international goals, we’re bringing together an Advisory Board of experts and key stakeholders. This board will offer guidance, share ideas, and help us stay open to new opportunities for collaboration. Their input will ensure that our strategy for regenerative tourism stays relevant, ambitious, and aligned with the big picture.
